When I gave my first tour seven years ago, it was of the Roman Forum and Colosseum\u2026 a two hour \u201chighlights\u201d tour for which I had studied excessively for the previous six months. I listened to podcasts, I read books, I triangulated information and I went on tours with other guides repeatedly until I felt ready. I was ready to create a grand narrative, sweeping from the foundation of the city on Palatine<\/strong> hill (remember that word, it comes back later) to the development of the Roman Republic to the slow decay of democracy and the emergence of an empire. I had names. I had dates. I had anecdotes. I was ready to crush my poor first clients with information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first question I was asked, right in the middle of what I hoped was an eloquent description of the conflict of Marius and Sulla was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSorry but\u2026 what are those trees over there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had no idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the beginning of my education to what the job of a guide is. On any given day you are a historical lecturer, art historian, psychologist, comedian, negotiator, botanist (apparently), babysitter and witness to one of the world\u2019s great phenomenons: The American family on vacation. Some people want to know every detail of every rock in the Roman Forum or who painted that fresco in the far right corner of the room we saw twenty minutes ago. Some people want to casually stroll through the sights in ten minutes and go get a glass of wine. They\u2019re battling jet lag, cranky kids and occasionally each other. They are in Italy for a million reasons: to relax, to learn something, to be awed and amazed, maybe just because their friends went and they want to take some great pictures. As the tour guide of small private tour groups, you have to be ready to adapt to any of these scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer, by the way, is Pinus Pinea otherwise known as umbrella pine or the Italian stone pine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat type of tree is that\u201d remains one of the most frequently asked questions and one which I can now answer. And that too, is the job of the tour guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below are quotes I\u2019ve collected over the years of tourists that I hope will give a humorous insight into some of the things we encounter while on the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geographically challenged<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Overheard students on a bus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student 1: I loved the Palestine Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student 2: Yeah, that was really cool. The tour was so informative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student 1: I didn\u2019t get how it was connected to Israel though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student 2: Yeah, me neither.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe after seeing the Colosseum, we could visit Pisa this afternoon?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*This is really common. I think people assume everything is a lot closer than it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Them: So wait, I thought the Parthenon was in Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: It is! This is the Pantheon. Very common to mix those two up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Them: So we\u2019re not going to see the Parthenon today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Well, no\u2026 as you said yourself: It\u2019s a temple in Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Them: So it\u2019s too far to get to?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: \u2026..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman on a tour from the cruise ship: Where are we?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Gave street name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: No, like the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding your audience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me and a couple. Man from LA, woman not speaking, only smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: So, how did you two meet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: Online!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Oh cool, so like a dating app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: Kind of. She\u2019s from Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me (addressing woman): Wow, long distance relationships are tough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: She doesn\u2019t speak English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me (totally not getting it): Oh so you must speak Russian! How did you learn that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: No, I don\u2019t really speak it actually. This is the first time we are meeting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me (getting it): Oh! How \u2026 fun?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Points to \u20ac500 necklace in shop window. Smiles at man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Let\u2019s start the tour of the Roman Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Where is the car?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: There is no car, it\u2019s a tour of the Roman Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: We were promised a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: It\u2019s not possible to drive there so I don\u2019t think they promised a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Fine, well when we go in, I need to find a Vodafone store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Actually, it\u2019s an archeological ruin. There are no stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman (now completely exasperated): Fine! Let\u2019s just go in and find a caffe to sit in and have coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: There\u2019s no caffe\u2019s either. It\u2019s literally a bunch of rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: This is ridiculous!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me and a family as 10 year old dissolves into meltdown:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom: Sorry about Timmy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: I understand, traveling can be hard for kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom: Yeah and we arrived on the plane from the states this morning and he didn\u2019t sleep at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Ooh, that has to be rough on him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom: Also he didn\u2019t eat since we left Texas about 24 hours ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: What? Wow, maybe we should cut the tour short if he\u2019s not feeling well?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom: Yes, and these days he\u2019s also refusing to take his ADD meds as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: !!! Maybe we should get some\u2026 gelato?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom: We\u2019ve been trying that all day to make him eat something but \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Timmy: I HATE GELATO! WHY IS EVERYONE TRYING TO MAKE ME EAT IT? WHY!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vatican tour with an Indian family my first year touring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve gone through the whole museum, we\u2019ve talked about the story of Genesis on the Sistine Chapel, we\u2019ve spent hours together. They are all smiling and very polite but not so interactive so I\u2019m just doing my thing. We leave the Sistine Chapel. After more silence the husband turns to me like he has something he can\u2019t hold in anymore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Husband: So I have a question. In the scene of God and Adam\u2026 What is the difference?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Between what exactly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Husband: Between God and Adam? They aren\u2019t the same?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wife: Yes and I have a question too. What about the difference between Jesus and God? Because\u2026 you say they believe there is one god but it seems like there are two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Husband: Actually there are three because there is this trinity. Who is the third God?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wife: But wait, is Jesus a God or a man?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me (Kicking myself for not realizing sooner that they are Hindu and have no background in the Christian religion): Well\u2026 it\u2019s complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not understanding the past or in some cases the concept of \u201cother countries\u201c<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me (after describing the fall of the Roman Republic in the first century BC for about thirty minutes): This temple, built by Emperor Augustus, was finished in the year 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: What! People were ALIVE then?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guest: Where is the seventeenth chapel? Or Where are the first fifteen chapels?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guest: So is Michelangelo still producing art?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After discussing the Pantheon, Colossuem and construction of Roman Aqueducts, we stop in front of a wall of tufa blocks stacked one on top of another. You know\u2026 a wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: How did they know how to do this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: How to do what exactly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: Build this wall!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Well this wall actually dates to around the same time as all the other (implied: more impressive) things we\u2019ve seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: But how did they know?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Know\u2026..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: I mean how did they know if you put one block on another it will make a wall?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: I don\u2019t understand what you don\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: It\u2019s just so frustrating that we can\u2019t use dollars here, I don\u2019t understand it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Well, here they use euros, not dollars<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: it\u2019s so inconvenient, why don\u2019t they make the switch already?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Why do they park this way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Yes, it\u2019s kind of crazy but there are very few parking garages in Rome and the city just wasn\u2019t built for this many people\u2026 or cars for that matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: I mean, can someone teach them how to park?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: I think they know how to park, it\u2019s just a little more disorganized than Americans are used to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: I\u2019m sure they could find someone to help them because this parking is just impossible. There must be someone who can explain it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Group tour of the Roman Forum with one Jewish couple and one Christian couple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: So they were pagan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: yes, they didn\u2019t believe in Christianity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: It\u2019s amazing they could even make a society with no morals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Well they had their own kind of morals, they just weren\u2019t derived from the Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man (knowing look): Without the teachings of Christ, those aren\u2019t real morals though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jewish Couple: \u2026\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: There can still be a civilization without Christianity. Think about \u2026 all of world history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man (still incredulous): I just can\u2019t believe society worked at all and didn\u2019t fall apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Well\u2026 I guess it eventually did?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: That explains it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man telling me everything he knows throughout the tour. I was trying to interject so I wasn\u2019t totally wasting his money but it seemed clear eventually that he was more interested in telling me HIS knowledge. I tried to engage in conversation and debate but he didn\u2019t want to do that. Just facts. From him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally he said: You know I can recommend some great videos on this stuff if you\u2019d like to know more about the history of Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Thanks! Well our time is up, that\u2019s \u20ac200.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When guests decide to hate you and let you know it. I\u2019m sorry to say but this is always and only ever women. (Men may hate me but they keep it to themselves.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a couple. I stop in front of a monument and start a little introduction. As I\u2019m speaking the woman moves further away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman shouting to husband: This is ridiculous, I can\u2019t hear her at all!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I move closer and she turns away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Well, let\u2019s go inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman to husband: She refuses to speak to me. I can\u2019t hear anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note: Women pointedly standing away from the group and then complaining to their husband that they can\u2019t hear has happened many times. Please enlighten me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tour with two older couples. An hour into the tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman (interrupting story about Julius Caesar): What about this rock? What is THIS stone called?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Ancient Rome is primarily constructed of tufa, travertine, bricks and marble but this one doesn\u2019t look like any of those. I\u2019m not sure what type it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Ha found something you didn\u2019t know!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: I don\u2019t know everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Ha! (Triumphant) I guess I could be a guide too, then!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of this full day tour she was on a rant about how everyone from \u201cmy generation\u201d was lazy and a piece of shit (her words!) while her husband repeatedly told her to stop. After a pause she graciously added: \u201cNot you, Lauren.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Thank you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political (In)Correctness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Morning group: Trump is finally speaking some truth in our country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afternoon group: Trump is destroying our country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me to both: Look at this painting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man speaking to me: This me-too movement is a bunch of bullshit, don\u2019t you think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Ummm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: So what do Italians think of American politics?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me (taking the most neutral response possible): There are some who agree and like many policies and others who disagree with some policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: Do they have ANY IDEA how much the United States has helped thousands of people on this planet throughout history??<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me (realizing nothing is acceptable besides total adoration of the homeland): I\u2019m sure they know all about those great things!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: Unbelievable. Some people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: I know, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With couple in City Center after man has frequently looked at other women\u2019s breasts making comments like: Those are nice ones. His wife appears completely unfazed by this and happy. I\u2019m confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: What kind of work do you do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: I\u2019m the best goddamn plastic surgeon in the Northern Hemisphere. Breasts are my specialty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wife (Smiling): He did mine, see? They\u2019re incredible!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very old couple from New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: I used to not understand the gays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me (panicking, oh god where is this going): Gay people?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Man: Right! But then I met them and they are just GREAT! Now my wife makes them pesto every Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: I love pesto!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After waiting 5 minutes past the meeting time, I notice a couple sitting farther down the road. They are reading a guidebook so I think probably they aren\u2019t the people I want to meet for the tour. But nobody else is in sight. I go over to them to ask and it turns out they are my people! All, good ready to go and then\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: I\u2019m so sorry I didn\u2019t see you earlier, since you were sitting a little farther away from the meeting point I assumed you were waiting for a different tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Did you think it wasn\u2019t us because we\u2019re Indian?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me (inside): Ahhhhhh<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman (conspiratorial): You know the real reason the Pope resigned?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teenagers suffering jet lag, probably hating their parents:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Parents: They just studied Greek and Roman mythology so they\u2019ll know all about this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Do you remember who the goddess of love is?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teenager: Ummmm<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Don\u2019t worry, it\u2019s Venus! Now, what about the god of war\u2026 any idea who that was?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teenager: Venus?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Literally any other name would have been a good guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tour in the Vatican with a family. Teenage boy bored out of his mind, staring at the floor and not interacting for an hour. I gave up on him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Now we are going into the hall of the busts<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teenage boy (eyes practically bugging out of his head): Hall of the what???<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: This is the tomb of Queen Margarita. What is her name associated with?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kid: Drinks!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom: Shush, honey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With family: husband, wife and two kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me (talking about some artist): Well, he wasn\u2019t faithful to his wife, he had lots of affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kid: Sounds like you dad!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: The Medici family was very rich. How do you think they got so rich?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 year old: They were bankers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Wow yes (parents looking surprised so he wasn\u2019t prepped before hand).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 Year old: I have a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: Yes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 Year old: Were they good bankers or were they the kind that steal all your money?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Is this is the Sistine Chapel?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guide: No. The chapel is at the end. We have to see the rest of the museums first. Remember the pictures we just looked at? That\u2019s the Sistine Chapel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Oh, ok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Group walks into the Pinecone courtyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Is THIS the Sistine Chapel?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guide (looking up at the blue sky over head): No. It is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guide: And once Rome was burned to the ground, Emperor Nero built a second massive palace for himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kid: How?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guide: He was very rich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kid: So he built a palace? That\u2019s stupid. He should have bought Nintendo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten minutes into the tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guide: The Colosseum was constructed in the first century<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guest: Can you please stop talking?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entering the Roman Forum: Just one thing: Can we just skip the history part here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Nobody will take my money here, it\u2019s the strangest thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guide: You mean, they want credit cards? That seems strange. Usually people want cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Yes we are paying with cash and nobody will take it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guide: Huh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: I mean I brought all these dollars and nobody will take them, it\u2019s ridiculous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guide: Dollars? But here they use euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman: Well it\u2019s not like I have any of those, what do they expect me to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guide: And beyond this 16th century street you can see the ruins of the Portico d\u2019Ottavia from the first century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guest: Oh what a shame. Why did they put this old ruin right in the middle of this nice neighborhood?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
